Deputy Minister at Department of Telecommunication and Postal Services SA

Prof Hlengiwe Buhle Mkhize is the Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services of the Republic of South Africa from 26 May 2014. She has served as a member of Parliament since 2009.

She is a founder member and a trustee of the Children and Violence Trust since 1995 and she has been a trustee of the Malibongwe Business Trust from 2005.

She a Chairperson of the Peace Commission of the South African Women in Dialogue since 2004; she also a Treasurer General of the African National Congress (ANC) Women's League (WL) and became the member of the National Executive Committee of the WL since 2008.

Chief Executive Officer: SqwidNet

As CEO of SqwidNet, Reshaad is entrusted with building an IoT connectivity business in South Africa in partnership with the global IoT network operator, Sigfox. He also serves as the Group Chief Strategy Officer at DFA where he is responsible for Corporate Strategy, Product Innovation and long term business planning. In his role at SqwidNet, a wholly owned subsidiary of DFA, Reshaad will roll out a nationwide open access IoT network to provide a connectivity platform that will enable industries across South Africa to participate in the digitisation shift that is upon us. Reshaad has held various director-level positions primarily in the telecommunications industry, which afforded him the opportunity to work closely with many leading telecommunications operators in the USA, South Africa, across the Middle-East and Africa, Russia, Turkey, and South East Asia. He has fulfilled various executive roles which included Managing Director of a wholesale voice termination company headquartered in Singapore and Director of Strategy at Cisco where he advised governments and telecommunications operators across the emerging markets. Prior to Cisco Reshaad held various senior executive roles in the OSS/BSS environment across the Middle-East & Africa. Reshaad is an executive MBA candidate at UCT’s Graduate School of Business and recently completed a dissertation on the role Service Providers play in an IoT ecosystem.

Thomas Nicholls is the SIGFOX Communications director. As a frequent speaker at international Internet of Things conferences, Thomas Nicholls blends his expertise in cellular connectivity and embedded software with his excitement about the IoT’s promise to positively change virtually all aspects of life.
Thomas worked along side SIGFOX CEO Ludovic Le Moan at Goojet/Scoop.it, where he was director of engineering on one of the world’s first successful mobil social B2C mobile apps.
As part of the architecture team, Thomas helped define the technical architecture for distributed scalable data storage for the Joost startup, founded and managed by the founders of Skype. Prior to that, Thomas worked on a wide range of software based projects, ranging from embedded software to web applications, in several different countries.

Head of Africa – Digital Infrastructure at Mott MacDonald

Bora is the head of Africa for digital infrastructure practice at Mott MacDonald. His over 18 years’ international experience in the telecommunications industry covers emerging markets from Asia, Central, Southern and Eastern Europe to Middle East and Africa.
Throughout his career, Bora has successfully set-up new businesses and practices, established and managed large project teams in emerging markets, pioneered strategic alliances and partnerships with both industry players and investors and led the development of practical solutions to complex business challenges. Bora has lived and worked in Turkey, Philippines, Indonesia, India, France, Austria, Nigeria, Gabon, DRC and South Africa and conducted business in more than 30 countries. His understanding of African telecommunications market and background in strategy and negotiations combined with his commercial experience bring a unique support and value-add to his clients. His business engagements included communication service providers, funders and investors, regulators and technology vendors both in private and public sectors.

Bora thrives to contribute expansion of broadband footprint globally and digital inclusion as a human right. He has been elected to become a board member of FTTH Council Africa in May 2016, an independent, not for profit organisation that believes the development of fibre based broadband access networks will enhance the quality of life for citizens in South Africa and Africa as a whole.

Ndubuisi Ekekwe

Ndubuisi Ekekwe

Founder, CEO at Zenvus Nigeria

Ndubuisi Ekekwe holds two doctoral and four master’s degrees, including a PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and MBA from University of Calabar, Nigeria, by March 2009. He founded Ultinet Systems-an IT & telephony firm- and formerly held the title of Banking Executive with Diamond Bank Plc, Lagos. He is the Founder of the non-profit African Institution of Technology and has held visiting positions in three African universities. A US semiconductor industry veteran, he blogs at Harvard Business Review site. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Babcock University, Nigeria.

He authored/edited four major books: Adaptive Application-Specific Instrumentation and Control Microsystem; Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy: Corrosion Behavior Application; Nanotechnology and Microelectronics: Global Diffusion, Economics and Policy (won IGI Global 2010 Excellence in Technology Research ‘Book of the Year’ Award.); and Disruptive Technologies, Innovation and Global Redesign: Emerging Implications .

An inventor, he holds a US Patent on microchip used in minimally invasive surgical robots and has authored many journal and conference papers. As a student, he worked on the NASA Jet Propulsion project- distribution of HV and HF in the space environment. Dr. Ekekwe has organized more than thirty five seminars and workshops on technology design, innovation and diffusion across Africa for schools, small firms and governments. He obtained BEng electrical & electronics engineering from Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria (FUTO, Aug 1998) where he finished top of his class.
